The History Behind the Swallows Day Parade

The story begins at ign-baseline”><span class=”whitespace-normal”>Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776. According to local lore, cliff swallows began nesting in the mission’s ruins in the late 18th century after migrating from South America. Each year, around March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day), the swallows were believed to return to San Juan Capistrano, creating a natural spectacle that fascinated residents and visitors alike.

This annual migration inspired community members to establish what would become the Swallows Day Parade. The first documented parade was held in 1930, organized by local citizens to celebrate the swallows’ return and highlight the town’s rich Spanish and Western heritage.
